Sometimes a topic gets such strong reactions that people have to broadcast it before they can focus on what to do. The ability to block is an integral part of the consensus, but it comes with great responsibility. A block prevents other people from doing what they would like to do, so it should only be used in case of serious doubts. There are many reasons why you want to divide a large session into small groups for part of a consensus process. If so, each small group can take on another topic or task. Even when parallel groups discuss the same topic, more people can actively explore a topic at the same time, saving time in the long run and increasing participation. If you use more people in this way, it can increase the energy in space and allow you to discuss emotionally charged topics that would be difficult in a large group. Finally, concentrated tasks, such as proposal development, can be done more effectively by a small group. Consensus can require a lot of commitment and patience to make it work. Everyone has to be ready to really try. This means sticking to the process rather than moving to a majority decision if you disagree.

The most valuable part a team leader can play is knowing what development phase the team is working on and providing the support needed to ensure better team development and possible project success. After implementation, use strategies that will take your team to the next phase of the team formation process. If you follow this simple process, you quickly have a successful team. Make sure everyone understands the different options used for consent/denial in your group. Often people are confused and block when they would really like to be by their side. Sometimes people are afraid of blocking, when they are deeply unhappy and instead use a more lenient form of disagreement.

Ask people what their problems are with the proposal and if they have any proposals on how to address them. By consensus, everyone can „block“ a proposal – and prevent it – by not giving its approval. This option should never be taken lightly, as it deprives others of the freedom to do what they want. However, it provides a safety net for situations where a proposal would seriously violate the group or those present. Many groups rarely use the block, but the fact that it is there means that everyone knows from the beginning that minority opinions cannot be ignored, but solutions must be found to resolve all important issues.
